How to Wear a Neutral Palette
For the past
several seasons, it's been all about the neutrals! Beige, camel,
olive, white, and cream take center stage as the muted color
palette continues to reign supreme. But, all this emphasis
on neutrals can make your wardrobe feel like it is stuck in . .
. well . . . neutral. Here are a few helpful tips for
spicing things things up now and for when spring and summer
finally arrive!
First, consider texture and cut. The idea that "white is white
is white" no longer holds true. With the emphasis on luxe
fabrics and stylings, there is a wide assortment of fabrics and
designs available, even for basic pieces. Pencil skirts might
have draping, sheen, or lace while button-front blouses are
covered in ruffles, pleats, or stud details. Don't forget
the sequins either! Picking pieces that have a varied
texture or style from everything else in your wardrobe will turn
the neutral trend from "blah" to "beautiful."
Next, learn to mix neutrals. If your wardrobe consists of
varied neutrals in interesting textures, styles, and cuts,
mixing neutrals can be an easy way to change up outfits and have
fun with your wardrobe. Try that olive military jacket with a
chambray button-front, or mix tones of white for a chic,
monochromatic look. Most neutrals in the same color family
(e.g., black, white, gray) will all easily interchange.
Neutrals in different color families, like black and camel, will
still go together, but the look has to seem intentional.
Vary the texture and tone of the colors so that you pull off a
cohesive look. For example, a black silk shirt and a camel
tweed pencil have a sexy, secretary feel!
Also, try prints! Prints can be intimidating, but with the
plethora of gorgeous leopards, florals, and even camouflages,
picking up a printed item is easy and inexpensive. If you're
wary of prints, try a leopard print scarf to wear to the office.
For the bolder, go for a dress in an eye-catching floral for
that intense girly vibe.
With all the neutrals, don't forget to add a pop of color.
Consider buying a few accessories or pieces in colors that
complement the neutrals in your wardrobe and then adding them to
outfits. A bright yellow ruffled blouse will look
beautiful and fun when paired with a silky cream-colored tulip
skirt and camel wedges. Colorful clothes, especially mixed
together, are also big this year, and they can be the perfect
items to pair with your neutral pieces when you want to change
things up.
Finally, experiment with accessories! Bags, scarves,
tights, shoes, and belts can be an easy way to up the ante on
the texture in your outfit. Woven belts have that exotic,
safari feel while patent leather seems sharper and minimalistic.
Suede can add a subtle matte texture while feathers or lace
create unexpected drama in simple outfits.
Just have fun with the trend and focus on combining your
wardrobe pieces in ways that suit your personal style, vibe,
and body, and you can't go wrong.
